Russell K. Schutt is professor and chair of sociology at the University of Massachusetts Boston and part-time lecturer on sociology in the Department of Psychiatry, Massachusetts Mental Health Center, Harvard Medical School. He received his PhD at the University of Illinois at Chicago and was a postdoctoral fellow in the Sociology of Social Control Program, Yale University. He is the author of Investigating the Social World: The Process and Practice of Research (Pine Forge Press), Organization in a Changing Environment: Unionization of Welfare Employees (SUNY Press) and coauthor of Responding to the Homeless: Policy and Practice (Plenum Press). His articles on homelessness, organizations and occupations, mental health issues, and the sociology of law have appeared in Journal of Health and Social Behavior, Social Problems, Evaluation and Program Planning, Psychiatric Services, American Journal of Sociology, Law and Society Review, Community Mental Health Journal, Current Research on Occupations and Professions, Sociological Practice Review, and others. He has co-directed a videotape on homelessness for shelter staff and has written computer exercises in research methods (distributed with his methods text). He is secretary of the Eastern Sociological Society and has been chair of its Graduate Education Committee, as well as chair of the American Sociological Association's MA Certification Committee, co-author of reports on master's programs and applied programs, and associate editor of Teaching Sociology.
