Peter Suber obtained his PhD in philosophy and JD from Northwestern University. He has taught philosophy, law, and computer science at Earlham College for 20 years. He is the maintainer of the Guide to Philosophy on the Internet, one of the oldest and most comprehensive philosophy portals. He is the general editor of Hippias, the most-used search engine for philosophy and the only one whose index is based on peer review. With Tony Beavers, he is co-editor of Noesis, a successor to Hippias now undergoing further development. He currently serves on the board of governors of the International Consortium for the Advancement of Academic Publishing (ICAAP). Lingua Franca magazine named him one of "Academia's 20 Most Wired Faculty" in 1999. In March 2001 he started writing the Free Online Scholarship Newsletter, which covers the movement to publish scientific and scholarly literature on the Internet and make it available to readers free of charge.
