David A. Spencer, EdD, is president and chief executive officer of the Michigan Virtual University. MVU is a private, not-for-profit corporation founded in 1998 to serve a variety of credit and non-credit education and training needs with special focus on Michigan's core industries, including manufacturing, information technology, health care, and K-12 education.
MVU's mission is to meet the specific workforce development, education and training needs of Michigan businesses, industries, and the education community through the innovative use of distributed learning. Its goal is to expand the capacity of Michigan education and training providers to use technology to provide convenient and cost-effective distributed learning and training opportunities for Michigan's core industry sectors. To that end, MVU has developed four business units: Corporate Learning Services which creates training solutions for businesses; Career Guidance Services, which provides career development tools for students, educators, employees and employers; the Michigan Virtual High School, which offers online learning opportunities to K-12 educators and students; and Educational Services, which serves as a clearing house for online education experiences at the college level. Through these business units, MVU serves approximately 75,000 users per year with online courses, seminars, consulting, and hosting services.
Spencer is the former president and CEO of Walsh College of Accountancy and Business Administration in Troy, Michigan. Under his leadership, Walsh College developed a new master's degree in business administration, a master's in information management and communication, and multi-level courses in interactive marketing, all of which incorporate information technology into the curricula.
Spencer received his EdD degree with a major in instructional technology and organizational communication from Wayne State University; an MA degree in instructional design and development from Michigan State University in East Lansing; and a BA degree from Olivet College (Olivet, Mich.).
